European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
