A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
