The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a convincing victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
